The Dewey Decimal Classification is the world’s most widely used library classification system. It is progressively ordered in ten classes on each level and can be extended indefinitely to lower, fractional hierarchical levels. The ten main classes are supposed to correspond to the disciplines. The linear progression is represented by a numeric notation system in which numbers are added to incrementally specify a subject. In this example the path to the class “Guitar” (787.87) is depicted.
